In the overview I wrote that the game will require 10+ playthroughs, but, really, it's going to be more like 2 or 3 times that: following an actual story path can take as little as an hour or less, but once you realize that, for example, going on a night crawl will essentially rob you of a story event and transition the game from one day to the next, and that you have to successfully night crawl 100 times for a trophy, well, that could mean either 30 playthroughs (of an hour to an hour and a half each) in order to get in a couple of night crawls per playthrough (once you're clear on which story events you can skip), or it could mean a single playthrough of many hours in which you do nothing other than make night crawl appointments and give up on the story altogether.

As such, the most important thing to do is to figure out the basics of gameplay - because the game is a download-only title in North America there is no actual manual to explain some of the more peculiar design decisions in the game - and then decide how you want to spend your time.

only "sort of" killing two birds with one stone because, of course, in order to be able to do that - take on up to 100 enemies, that is - you would first need to upgrade your weapon sufficiently enough that it doesn't take you 5 minutes to kill a single enemy, and still have enough money to buy multiple items like Blade Oil in order to make sure your upgraded weapon doesn't break 1/4 of the way through the mission, all of which will cost you way more cash than you'll easily be able to accumulate given the dire starting condition of your default weapon.Įverything in this game is grinding: spending time to earn money not only to upgrade weapons but also to buy all of the accessories in the game spending time to collect weapons and styles spending time to unlock moves, etc. Everything else is a question of figuring the game out and trying to maximize the efficiency with which you get things done. Way of the Samurai 4 is a game that requires you on one playthrough to beat up a character without killing him in order to recruit him as your blacksmith, to then kill him on that or a subsequent playthrough in order to acquire the weapon he carries, to then kill him twice more on two other playthroughs in order to acquire his two alternate weapons, and then, on a fourth playthrough, to again beat him up without killing him in order to recruit him as your blacksmith once more.Īll of which is to say that there is, frankly, no optimal method to unlocking the trophies in Way of the Samurai 4: almost every single thing the trophy list requires you to do is an absolute grind, to the degree that there are really only 4 trophies that you're guaranteed to unlock on a single playthrough of the game - First Kill, Labor Union, Cherry Move, and While It's Hot - with three of those likely coming within the first 5 or so minutes of your first playthrough.
